Fiber Collage, finished at last

Another class project finished, finally.
The front:

The back:

Materials: The usual batiks, low-loft batting, embroidery flosses, seed beads of various sizes, vintage Czech glass sew-ons (the bracelet), charms, beads, milagros, a paintbrush and some hand-dyed rickrack and fibers.
Miscellaneous details:
The quote is Frida Kahlo's; "I never paint dreams or nightmares. I paint my own reality."
The hand is an outline of my right hand, palm up. The words along the vine/line embroidery are "HEAD HEART LIFE LOVE FATE". It's not an accurate representation of palmistry, more of a concept thing. The bracelet charm is assembled from an image of Frida Kahlo left over from my Dia de Los Muertos bracelet kit and a square frame charm, both from Silvercrow Creations, and a good dollop of gel medium (I love that stuff).
The charm in the center of the sun is a gold winged heart.
The charms along the bottom are, from left to right, Anima Sola (it's down a bit on the page), a gold sun, a silver lightning bolt, a copper moonface, an eye milagro, a big copper heart milagro, a gold star, an earth globe bead, a copper petroglyph spiral, a silver crescent moon, and a winged pig.
The hanger is a cheap paintbrush with all the markings sanded off, to which I gave a coat of Lumiere Super Sparkle, then wrapped it with some hand-dyed rickrack and added some rainbow-colored fibers. The tabs are the same fabric as the back of the block, with featherstitching in seed beads.

Date: 2010-07-06 07:47 pm (UTC)Julia, there's a skill not to be minimized: it takes eye, and memory, and persistance, and putting things where they can be found

Date: 2010-07-06 10:06 pm (UTC)I spend a lot of time (one might say waste) putting things in tins with clear lids, or little zip bags, and putting those in drawers or boxes with labels, and still I end up buying supplies over again because I can't find them, or forget I had them at all.
Then there's the whole thing of being afraid to actually use something because I may never find another like it... That seems to happen to a lot of us - my cousin, for one, admits to the same problem.
