Back when we bought the house and Younger Daughter got a room of her own, I bought her an Ikea three-bin thingy - metal legs and fittings, wood top and bottom, three bins (two small, one large). It's been full of treasures ranging from doll dishes and foods to musical instruments to alchemical supplies (better not to know).

Last weekend I offered her a deal - if she could find other homes for all that stuff, we'd buy her another small bookcase to replace the bin thingy.

She did, we did*, Husband put the little bookcase together this afternoon, and Younger Daughter, who is strong like an Amazon, single-handedly moved the bin thing to the living room and installed her bookcase.

I, not being as strong, lugged the bin thing to the den (puff puff pant pant oogh). After dinner, I cleaned all the dust and grime off, lugged it to my closet, did a major clearout of the yarns and crochet cottons and reorganised all of them. Cleared out two of the big purple plastic bins altogether and combined the remaining Knit-Cro-Sheen** with the yarn, I did. And rediscovered my wool needlepoint threads, which I put with the embroidery floss in case I ever need it again. Medici needlepoint wool makes very nice tassels as well.

Then I installed the bin thingy in the corner where the purple bins live and stacked the remainder on top. The three bins hold my tatting cottons and crochet cottons in sizes 20-50 quite nicely, and now I can actually get to them without having to unstack a bunch of large plastic bins, which will make putting things away easier from now on.

The culls will probably go to Daria's friend, who will pass them on to his "knitting girl" or the orphanage in Mexico. They'll be useful to someone; that's the main thing.

Go me. Go Captain Kitsa. [Falls over in an exhausted heap]

Tomorrow, I'm going to take apart the mermaid shelf and line it with nice handmade watery-colored paper, then put everything back. One of Emily's discards was a photo holder, with a faux-Indian base (embedded with little diamond-shaped mirrors) in turquoise and four heavy-gauge wires sticking out the top, each ending in a flat spiral. I'm going to adjust the wires a bit and use it to display mermaid pendants and maybe some fish, all of which can be removed to be used in jewelry as needed. I was going to make something similar, and now I don't have to.

*It's really a three-shelf "storage unit" from Target, cheap white wood, but quite adequate for the purpose.

**Just the interesting colors and the metallics; if I ever need white or ecru KCS again, it's easily obtainable, and as for the rest, I prefer DMC to Coats anyway. Yes, I am a crochet cotton snob.

I really do need to organize and cull more of my own stuff... You're inspiring!
