I just can't win.

We got proselytizers. I was polite. "I'm sorry, we aren't Christians".

Didn't work. She said, "Oh, that's okay" and kept right on pushing.

So I upped the ante. Politely. "We're pagan, but thank you anyway".

That worked. She thanked me for opening the door, I told her to have a good day, she left.

So Emily started in on me, because Emily is an agnostic (at the moment) and she felt that I was insulting her and limiting her rights, or something.

I explained that (a) I didn't want to go into the scope and variance of religious belief and non-belief in our household and (b) it wouldn't have worked anyway, since the woman didn't take "not Christian" for an answer. Then I walked away, because smiteage leaves such a mess on the carpets.

Now I, personally, am an agnostic of the pagan sort, but that's hard to explain and wouldn't have helped anyway. Maybe I need a pentagram plaque or a goddess statue for the front entrance (or just a bigger Buddha in the front garden). A Gaia in the front porch box, with the gnomes, the lawn flamingos, the hummingbird-on-a-stick and the wingéd piggy, that'd be cool.

Anne, I thought 2008 was going to be better, or at least less of the suck?

It helps, when I'm feeling mischeivous rather than territorial, to come on as an Evangelical Second Reformed Totemic Animist of the more radical Holy Compost communion, and try to convert them to the worship of seasonal migration and native plant recovery, but I have to be really on my game to do it.

Julia, because they're all blasphemers in my eyes, anyway, no matter what part of my head I'm thinking with that day

I usually say thank you, give them a dollar bill, say Bless you, or blessed be, take their booklet and close the door. Of course, they keep coming back, probably because I give them $1.00....
