I recently got the latest Bead E Art zine from Ronda Kivett, which is about amulets and symbolism, and it got me thinking. Ronda is a bead and collage artist, which doesn't begin to describe the wonderfulness of her work, and a really nice person. Her website is: here. Check out the beaded goddess gallery.
In her introduction, Ronda says, "we all carry something that I would consider a modern day amulet, whether it be something obvious such as a lucky rabbits foot, a tiny troll doll or something not so obvious like our keyring with various keys to our home or car... what do all these things have in common? They give a sense of security."
She's got a point there. So I started looking at the things I carry around with me, that get transferred from purse to purse.
There're the obvious amulets, like the little silk drawstring bag holding an ojime of a tiger curled in a human hand and a clear quartz heart, and my keyring, with the charm of Durga and the bronze coin from the coin-striker's booth at the Ren Faire, with the Chartres Labyrinth on one side, and an ancient labyrinth on the other, and the WWBD? keytag. I'm usually a rational being, but they make me feel safe and happy, and I haven't gotten lost driving since I put my labyrinths on my keyring.
Then there are the less obvious, like the spare car key and the photos of my cats and kids and the $2 bill I keep in my wallet, and the tiny Swiss Army knife my dad gave me.
It's all about security. Kitty has a fishing vest with lots of pockets; she uses them for a small journal/sketchbook, an assortment of pens and colored pencils, and a little stuffed Eevee named Hazel (a Pokémon), who is a featured player in the stories she's writing. Paul doesn't wear his wedding ring, because he's a paint chemist, and his hands are in and out of nasty things all day, but he keeps it on his keyring. Don't even get me started on the pens - he always has four or five gel pens in his shirt pocket, and he carries spares of his favorite colors in his bag in case he runs out in the middle of a meeting. Emily carries her commonplace notebook, a black planner with the VFD symbol written on the cover in green metallic ink, everywhere she goes.
At some point in the future, I'd like to discuss the charm bracelet as amulet, since that's exactly the sort of charm bracelets I've been noodling around with.
So, what do you carry around?
