Another Project Finished, Finally

I completed the mermaid Mini Vision Quilt over the weekend, and photographed it this morning. Only taken since last spring when the class started, but who's counting...

Assorted batiks, quilt batting (cotton Soft & Natural, if anyone's interested), various ribbons (her shawl is mesh giftwrap ribbon with the wires removed, her tail is sparkly holographic giftwrap ribbon, there's variegated sparkly sheer ribbon over the quilt binding), polymer clay face, fibers and yarns for her hair, wooden fish beads, flying fish images from a vintage poster printed on Extravorganza, Lumiere and acrylic fabric paints, sequins, vintage water-droplet acrylic jewels, sea stars (painted with Lumiere), plastic coral branch beads, a shell "trumpet" painted with glitter paint, seed and pearl beads, the remains of a vintage pearl and shell bracelet (her necklace), and a vintage resin earring (the fish in the lower left corner). Her shell bra is a couple of scallop-shell-shaped large spangles and some seed beads in the same shade of teal*.
I wasn't as engaged with this one, somehow - I'm not unhappy with the results, and I'll enjoy looking at her, but I still feel that Serenity, the folk doll quilt, is more "me". Perhaps I need peace more than I need play right now. So:
The mermaid is my sense of fun and play, which I seem to have lost. She's surrounded by light and color and friends, all fun and no worries.
She hasn't told me her name yet, but that takes time, I've found. She seems to want to be called Calypso, because of the dance, which to me evokes light and color and fun, not because of the mythology or the boat (or the John Denver song, for that matter). Calypso, she is, then.
*Rite Aid had packages of assorted shapes and colors of large spangles in their $1 bins at holiday season. Of course, I bought one of each shape and color. So far I've only used two of them.

I told her that it's because she's such a good teacher.
