anne_dNever, ever buy a "collage kit" made by Westrim Crafts. I got this one at Michaels some years ago with a 50%-off coupon, and I am very glad I didn't pay full price.
The large box it came in was about 1/3 packing, and the "Idea Booklet" was a two-sided small sheet with the pictures from the box reproduced, but smaller. No glues, no brushes, no helpful advice for the novice collager.
So Younger Daughter chose the spiral-bound journal, and I took the cardboard "treasure box", and I got out my glues and brushes, and we started playing around. I dug out some watch-face charms for her journal to go with the paper pictures of watch faces, and some black satin ribbon to tie a key on because she wanted ribbon instead of the cord that came with the kit.
She's happy. I'm done.
Also, somebody remind me next time I want to line something with mulberry paper - find some other material, because mulberry paper is very porous, quickly gets saturated with liquid glue (I used my bookbinding glue, because that's what I glue paper with), and when it's wet, it tears. Now that can be a good thing if you want a nice uneven edge, but when you're trying to smooth it onto a surface, not so good. So the inside of the box has patches here and there, but it's dark purple paper, and won't show. Much.
Eh. It was an experience, and now it's mostly done, except maybe for a few touchups after the glue dries, and I cleared a largish box out of my studio, and Younger Daughter and I did something together. Not to mention that I gave her the leftover silver and gold plastic cabachons to add to her hoard, so she's very happy.
What next? Maybe next week (or the week after, because I'm going to have all three of them home next week) I'll start on the family nicho. But first I should take pictures of all of them, and get Elder Daughter to take a picture of [shudder] me. I hate having my picture taken. Hate it hate it hate it. Probably one of the reasons I prefer being behind the camera.
