The Elder Daughter, out on a walk around the block this afternoon, spotted our neighborhood Cooper's Hawk taking down a pigeon. So she ran home, got her camera, came back and found him sitting over his catch. He does look fierce and majestic for such a relatively small raptor.

Lovely!

I once saw a Coops lift and fly off with a pigeon; as you can tell from this photo, pigeons are a good fraction of a Cooper's Hawk's size, so that was no mean feat.

Congratulate Emily for me!

Julia, such lovely killers, are Cooper's Hawks

It's very interesting watching two predators eye each other. My ball python, Nelson, and my cat, Mr. Gladstone, used to watch each other through the glass. All things being equal, I don't know which one of them would have won. Same with the hawk. He's smaller than the cat, but fearless and armed with fierce beak and talons.

What a great picture! It really captures predation.
