Oh Hapi Day

anne_dI sewed not one, but two jackets. What can I say, I got on a roll and jackets happened.
So. I began with the Folkwear Japanese Hapi and Haori pattern and played with it. The sleeves got longer and I added pockets.
Hapi I: was going to be a plain black hapi, but I found this absolutely awesome owl batik and I had to use it for a lining. Then I had to make the sleeves long enough to roll up at the cuffs. I also put facings on the pockets, so it has secret pocket owls. Black cotton from Joann's, owl batik from Lunn Fabrics on Etsy.

Hapi II: I have this cotton damask with stylized koi on that I bought 35-odd years ago. I kept thinking of making it into something, but never could decide what. Then I finished the first hapi, and making another just seemed like a good idea. This one has wrist-length sleeves and pockets. Otherwise it's pretty much the standard pattern. Dark blue cotton damask with koi, probably meant for tablecloths, from the old Home Silk Shop in Pasadena (later bought by Joann's), dark blue batik from Joann's. I was amused to find that the batik is named "Water Lily Petals". How perfect is that for koi?
If you squint at the close-up, you can kind of see the woven koi pattern.
