Because it's Superb Owl Sunday, and I just remembered, here is a very superb burrowing owl. Courtesy of Emily, from the San Diego River:

Today is...

National Brownie Day!

As it happens, I'm baking brownies right now. I'm timely and didn't even know.

Paul voted. Kitty voted. Emily's voting in San Diego now, but I'm sure she'll have voted by the end of today.

Now all we can do is wait and hope for the best.

We have another clutch of hummy eggs to watch, this time on the south side of the house.

The baby hummies have both left the nest. Here are the last few of Emily's blog entries documenting their progress:

And on the other side of the house, it begins anew:

Paul is out on the front porch, preparing for the annual influx of small visitors. The pumpkins are carved, I successfully repaired a large fake candle that flickers and makes weird noises, and Kitty's lent us hers, so it's sounding eldrich out there. The cauldron is filled with treats and waiting just inside the door. Paul even got out my Dia de los Muertos decorations and hung them.

While we wait for dark, in honor of today's festive holiday, an appropriate poem. It's also the one my parents gave me when I was ordered to memorize and recite one, back in elementary school. I can still recite it, and have, back when the Daughters were young enough to appreciate such things. So, without further ado, enter at your peril )

It's a loverly loverly Spring, and there are baby bluebirds peeking out of the nest boxes at our local park.

Elder Daughter has photographic evidence. Baby dinosaurs sure are weird-looking.

We went to the Ren Faire today. At least, 3/4 of us went; Kitty decided to stay home. photos follow )

It's been just over a week since the earth moved under Brea and surrounding environs. Things are quieting down again, although we had another 1.9 this afternoon which was quite a sharp jolt.

So, in celebration of the reduction, if not cessation, in aftershocks, I present the south wall of the livingroom, the family gallery, untouched by human hands since before the earthquake. As you can see, it's been a rocky and rolly week. Perhaps next week I'll get around to straightening all those frames... Please excuse the blurriness, it was dark and the shutter speed was on the slow side )

Saturday, I had my coffeeshop breakfast, did the TJs shopping for us and the last few items for Aged Mum, came home and slayed usefuls around the house. So far, so good )

Sunday was the monthly Aged Mum visit. AM asked if the swarm of bees was still in that tree in the front yard, so I wandered out to take a look. Yes, and they were building a hive, or nest, or whateverthehell that enormous thing in the fruitless mulberry is.

I got my camera and recorded the edifice for posterity. From several angles, using my telephoto lens. Fortunately, it's been cold enough that the bees were not bothered.

We just had a nice little earthquake.

According to the USGS: Rocking and rolling in Yorba Linda.

It was a short sharp jolt here, with no damage, at least that I've noticed so far. The cats were Not Amused. Let's hope that's all the excitement for the evening, and now I'd better go call Aged Mum, because if she hears about it from the local newsweasels, she Will Freak Out.

I got lucky on a walk to the market last Thursday. Read more )

Shadow, sleeping in the sun:

She was so sound asleep she actually didn't notice me frantically switching camera batteries and maneuvering for the best angle.
